Reflections

What you learned about yourself during this semester?

This semester has presented itself as one of the most challenging semesters, not academically, but personally. I’ve encountered numerous unforeseen obstacles and endured significant loses. However, each trail I faced served as a mirror reflecting aspects of myself back to me. Among the many lessons learned, I discovered a depth of wisdom within myself yet found a lack of trust in my own capabilities.

Throughout this semester, I had the privilege of collaborating on a project at FAU, funded by a $5,000 grant from Florida Blue, aimed at addressing food insecurity among the university population. Working alongside project collaborators, a multitude of ideas and perspectives were exchanged, making it difficult to adhere strictly to the project's original vision. Despite heeding the advice of others and implementing certain changes, something felt amiss. Upon reflection, I grew increasingly confident that the original approach was more suited to the project's objectives. Faced with individuals possessing greater experience, I incorrectly attributed greater wisdom to them. Eventually, it became evident that the deviations from the original plan were ineffective, leading us back to the initial strategy.

To cultivate greater self-trust, I recognize the need to: refrain from assuming that others always possess superior insight; acknowledge the unique perspectives and expertise I bring, particularly in leveraging technology and modern methodologies; and maintain clarity regarding the rationale behind my decisions, enabling me to withstand opposition without succumbing to doubt. In embracing these principles, I aim to strengthen my confidence in my abilities and navigate future challenges with greater assurance.

What you learned about this semester in terms of how to prepare yourself to be a successful criminal justice major (or other major)?

As I am nearing the end of my undergraduate program, I have garnered much knowledge in how to succeed academically. To excel as a social work major academically, several key skills and practices are essential. These include organization, effective time management, consistent class attendance, active participation, and networking with professors.

Organization plays a pivotal role in keeping track of deadlines and responsibilities. I stay organized by creating a comprehensive list of all assignments due throughout the semester, arranged by their respective deadlines. Good time management skills are crucial for prioritizing tasks and completing them promptly. By effectively managing my time, I can allocate adequate attention to each assignment and ensure timely completion. Attending classes regularly and actively participating in discussions significantly enhances my understanding of course content. Active engagement not only deepens comprehension but also reinforces retention of information. Furthermore, networking with professors proves invaluable in gaining access to additional resources and receiving insightful guidance relevant to my career aspirations. Establishing connections with faculty members not only expands my knowledge base but also provides valuable insights into career preparation.

By honing these skills and practices, I am better equipped to navigate the demands of my social work major and lay a strong foundation for future success in the field.

What you learned about this semester to prepare yourself to be a successful candidate for a criminal justice position.

Throughout this semester, I've come to realize that active engagement within my community and increased involvement in volunteer work are integral components of becoming a successful social worker. Unlike some professions where knowledge is primarily gained through textbooks, social work relies heavily on practical experience gained in real-world settings. Therefore, seeking opportunities for community involvement is essential in preparing for future roles in social work.

This understanding was reinforced during my involvement in a project focused on addressing food insecurity. Witnessing firsthand the impact of direct engagement with communities in need inspired me to seek further opportunities for volunteering. As a result, I am motivated to contribute more actively to initiatives supporting homeless shelters and food agencies, recognizing the profound difference such efforts can make in the lives of those facing adversity.

SMART Goals

Personal Goals

Measure: Reducing the frequency of seeking validation from others and measuring confidence levels in decision-making abilities through self-assessment.

Achievable: I have been going to therapy for a few months now which has helped me draw from inner strength to overcome many obstacles. I’ve seen progress in many areas of my life so far. With continuous therapy and prayer I will be able to achieve this goal.

Relevant: Increased self-trust will contribute to overall success and satisfaction in  personal and professional aspects.

Time: Reduce seeking validation from others by 50% within the next three months -

Academic Goals

Measurable: Tracking assignment grades and calculating my overall grade in each class to see if I’m on target to meet the A- requirement.

Achievable: Allocating the time and resources available for study based on the difficulty level of the courses. Also, tailoring my study habits to the course material. Creating a comprehensive list of all assignments due throughout the semester, arranged by their respective deadlines, to ensure effective time management.

Relevant: These grades will contribute to my overall GPA and set me apart from other candidates for jobs.

Time: Earn an A- in both classes by August 2, 2024. Other time specific goals will be set once I have access to the course syllabus regarding completion of assignments, etc.

Professional Goals

Specific: Finish studying for the CNA exam.

Measurable: Review the textbook material for an hour a day. Review and practice the CNA competency skills for an hour daily. Practice the CNA written exam for 30 minutes daily.
